Be Empowered Penang Convention

On 7th and 8th December 2017, two first year students from the School of Tourism and Hospitality at SENTRAL College Penang participated in Be Empowered Penang Convention at Setia SPICE in Bayan Lepas, Penang. Written below is Aishah’s reflection of her first time experience attending an international conference.

My Reflection Of “Be Empowered” Penang Convention

On the 7th and 8th December 2017, my course mate, Alex Yeap and I attended the “Be Empowered” Convention at Setia SPICE, Penang. This convention is the first series of educational and skill-sharing program initiated by Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB). It serves as a catalyst for our collective effort in developing Penang into a matured and competitive Business Events destination. PCEB believes that the Penang Business Events industry must come together to realise common goals, validate them and progress together towards a matured Business Events destination. To gain admission into this event, we were required to write an essay titled “how does the Business Events Industry boost the local economy”.

Why Did I Join This Convention?

The purpose of my participation is to learn more about how a convention works, and be updated about the tourism industry. I also want to familiarize and gain knowledge on the do´s and don’ts of organising Business Events, including conferences, meetings, exhibitions and incentive activities. Lastly, I would like to train myself to overcome my shyness, and to network with people within the tourist industry.

My Thoughts On This Convention

Some of the speakers did an amazing job at presenting their topics. For instance, Mr Martin Lewis showed us how to attract the European Market especially associations and the corporate sector and how this benefits the local associations. In my opinion, most of these topics are useful for those who hold high positions within the tourism industry.

In conclusion, I felt that the convention was well organized and I really enjoyed myself. Thank you so much to our lecturers who have given us this opportunity to participate in this event. Through this conference, I have a clearer understanding about the tourism industry, which can assist me in my further studies. Now that I have attended this event, I am even more motivated to study harder so that I can contribute better to the tourism industry!
